Courses + PHI Exams

Emu is an accredited PHI Builder Trainer, meaning that we are authorized to offer courses and exams for building professionals to gain the Certified Passive House Tradesperson designation. This course is 4 to 5 days, leading up to an international exam date.


Hands-On Workshops

We offer practical workshops that give participants an opportunity to apply advanced theory to practical applications, whether in the architecture office or on the construction site. These sessions are usually half or full day programs.


Informational Seminars

For those with more limited time but an appetite for learning, we regularly hold seminars, brown bag lunches, and happy hours. You can even join some of these virtually (via online tools). These sessions last 1 hour or so and really get the conversation going. 



Become a Certified Passive House Tradesperson

Get advanced building science training as a PHI Certified Passive House Tradesperson (CPHT).

Learn about the most advanced construction standard in the world, how to implement passive principles in your projects, and everything necessary to become a Certified Passive House Tradesperson (CPHT) through the International Passivhaus Institute (PHI). Open to all tradespeople and project team members with working knowledge of construction.

Air Tightness + Moisture Management

Understand what air tightness is, why it is important, and how to achieve it. Learn how to implement strategies to manage moisture in buildings while maximizing health & comfort of the occupant and minimizing liability to the builder. Understand the numbers and the economic factors. Get your hands on some materials and mockups during the practical exercises.

Thermal Bridges + Insulation

Understand principles of thermal insulation, its cost-effectiveness, and its expected performance once installed. Familiarize yourself with thermal bridges, how to avoid them, and how to mitigate them. Practice cost-effectiveness exercises for different types of thermal bridge, and learn to understand what could cause mold and condensation.

High Performance Windows + Doors

Learn to relate the required performance of windows and doors to comfort, moisture and climate-specific requirements. Understand the value of these dynamic components for the whole building, with cost-effectiveness analyses. Familiarize yourself with industry-specific products that can make a difference in the performance and durability of these components.

Mechanical Ventilation with Heat and Moisture Recovery

Familiarize yourself with the main concepts of mechanical ventilation and indoor air quality. Get to know different types of systems available on the market and their suitability for different project types. Understand cost-effectiveness of heat recovery systems, as well as what type to choose depending on local climate.


Hard Hat Happy Hours

Starting in May 2017, we will host a monthly 'Hard Hat Happy Hour' for our Denver Green Building Meetup Group. It will be hosted at our co-working space, Tradecraft Industries, usually on the 3rd or 4th Tuesday of the month from 5-7pm. We'll have a little networking time, a half-hour presentation, and some discussion. Upcoming topics include:
